Design

Design with Distinction

In a REL product line defined by gorgeous cabinetry, perhaps no model has received a more comprehensive update than 212 Black Label. A single vertical strake runs the cabinet’s height, capped by a distinctive crown badge that signals its refined status. On the top panel, an all-black badge framed in carbon fibre further marks it as Black Label. The warm silver, bead-blasted handles have a raw titanium feel, both striking and practical, while solid billet aluminum inside keeps things safe and steady, cutting down on unwanted resonance. An optional premium wood grille enhances both airflow and aesthetics, completing a design of unmistakable authority and refinement.

Driver

Driven with Authority

The 212 Black Label represents a comprehensive redesign of both active and passive driver systems to fully harness the output of its uprated 1,000-watt amplifier. Dual 12" CarbonAlloy™ active drivers, featuring lightweight carbon-fibre center caps release more energy with every stroke, delivering speed, control, and composure at levels unheard of in earlier generations.

To match, the two passive radiators, one down-firing for the deepest bass, the other rear-firing to enhance height and depth were completely re-engineered. Both now feature cast aluminum baskets to manage the extreme excursion required to support the additional 5dB (approximately 40%) increase in output. The internal cabinet has been carefully reshaped to allow the rear-firing passive to develop upper and mid-bass energy that wraps around the listener, creating an immersive, line-array-like effect.

The result is a subwoofer of immense authority faster, louder, and more spatially expressive than any before it. Every note, from the lowest rumbles to the most complex musical passages, flows with effortless power and precision.

Amplifier

Outrageousness Amplified

Like its Carbon Special Black Label stablemate, 212 Black Label is powered by a newly developed 1,000-watt hybrid amplifier that marries the current delivery of high-current Class A/B monoblocks with the efficiency of a Linear Class D output stage. This best-of-both-worlds design delivers immense dynamic power while consuming just 40 watts at idle — no more than a handful of night lights. Peaks of over 1,200 watts can be sustained for extended periods, producing explosive authority without strain. The result is an amplifier that sounds urgent, driven, and unshakably powerful, yet refined enough to underpin reference-grade stereo systems and anchor the largest theaters with complete composure.

Analog Filtered to Perfection

All REL input filters are 100% analog — among the fastest ever offered in a subwoofer. We choose analog because it is the only way to achieve natural sound. At the center is our famous High Level Input, which connects directly to the speaker outputs of your main amplifier. This does not draw power; instead, it carries the complete sonic signature of your system, allowing REL to blend seamlessly with your speakers, a trait reviewers have celebrated for decades. And for systems where High Level isn’t possible, our low-level input employs the very same filter circuit, available via both RCA and XLR connections, delivering the speed, naturalness, and integration REL is known for. For theatre and dual-use systems, REL allows High Level and .1/LFE to be run together, so music gains natural integration, while movie soundtracks deliver the full impact intended by the mix.

Wireless

Wired For Sound…Wirelessly

Sometimes the best wire is no wire. Quality cables are a given in high-end audio systems, but there are occasions where it is impractical, unsafe, or unsightly to drape a cable across the room. REL delivers the ultimate solution with Airship Direct™, our optional wireless system that transmits wide-bandwidth, compound signals, carrying both High Level and .1/LFE simultaneously. Even with the immense scale and output of 212 Black Label, Airship Direct™ preserves the speed, transparency, and authority that define REL. It allows seamless transitions between music and movies without ever touching the controls, all from a single module that plugs neatly into the rear panel and stays invisible in your room. Simple, direct, uncompromised: Airship Direct™.

How does my audio system benefit from the 212 Black Label Subwoofer?

The REL 212/SX Black Label carries forward everything beloved in the previous generation and refines it with even greater realism. It’s like hearing a favorite song performed live in a concert hall after years of enjoying it at home — instantly familiar, yet now enriched with new layers of texture, nuance, and emotion that make the experience more vivid and moving.
Its rear-firing design contributes not just depth, but a sense of height and scale usually reserved for REL line arrays. This added dimension makes the sound feel larger, more lifelike, and more immersive — bass that doesn’t just anchor the performance, but also opens it into the room with effortless presence.

What makes REL Serie S subwoofers different from other REL subwoofers?

REL’s Serie S subwoofers strike a unique balance between high-end performance and compact elegance. Compared to Serie T/x, Serie S models offer upgraded components, faster filters, and more powerful amplifiers—resulting in greater speed, clarity, and dynamic output. Comparing Serie S to the home theater–focused HT range, Serie S is engineered for both reference-grade two-channel music and cinematic immersion. Carbon Special Black Label, S/850 & S/550 are among the few REL subwoofers designed for line array stacking, a feature borrowed from REL’s flagship Reference Series.

Is the 212 Black Label subwoofer compatible with wireless systems?

Yes — the REL 212 Black Label is fully compatible with REL’s new Airship Direct wireless system, offering the freedom of wireless placement without sacrificing performance.
Airship Direct preserves the speed, dynamics, and transparency that define the 212 Black Label, ensuring bass that remains powerful, immediate, and seamlessly integrated — every bit the equal of a wired connection.

What room size is the 212 Black Label ideal for?

The 212 Black Label feels right at home in large rooms—around 400 to well over 1,000 sq. ft. It has the scale and authority to fill those spaces with ease, yet it does so with remarkable speed and precision. Music takes on a sense of weight and energy, while movies gain the kind of impact that makes the whole room come alive.
But what really sets the 212 apart is how it works with your speakers. It’s not just about adding more bass—it’s about creating a system that feels complete. When paired with speakers of similar ability, the 212 brings out refinement, clarity, and a seamless sense of space that makes everything sound more natural.
Think of it less as a subwoofer and more as a partner to your speakers—one that helps them show everything they’re truly capable of.

Can I stack 212/SX Black Label subwoofers in a line array?

The 212 Black Label was designed to deliver bass with a sense of effortless scale, the kind that naturally fills larger rooms with presence and authority. Its tall, elegant form is purpose-built to project height and spaciousness, allowing music to feel more dimensional and films more immersive, all while maintaining the speed and control that define REL.
In the broader range, certain models can be configured into Line Arrays, building towering systems with almost limitless headroom and vertical energy. The 212 Black Label offers a complementary path—bringing a touch of that same grandeur and vertical presence in a single, beautifully engineered cabinet.
This makes the 212 uniquely appealing. It stands tall—both physically and sonically—delivering scale, refinement, and immediacy in a form that is as elegant as it is powerful. For many systems and spaces, it is the perfect way to capture the spirit of REL’s largest designs in one commanding enclosure.
