Introducing REL Planar Subwoofers
The transcription of the video can be found below:
Hello everybody. This is John Hunter with REL.
I'm so excited to do this, to introduce you to the new Planar subwoofers that we're just releasing. They are like nothing we've ever done before. Someone experiencing Planar for the first time. It's almost a shock. And the reason I say that is you don't think something this pretty and this diminutive can deliver that experience.
Ultra-Thin Wireless Bass Designed for Modern Homes
These are 4.5 inches thick. It's about 105 mm thick. It's incredibly thin and narrow. You've got the ability to just slip this thing into locations that it just wasn't possible before.
They can go near walls, they can go on walls, they can go on front walls, they can go on back walls for rear subwoofer effects. There's a million applications for these. They are the perfect subwoofer for someone who always hated the notion of a subwoofer, who didn't want their room sort of taken over by larger than average boxes, that still loves music, loves film, wants the experience.
How Planar Uses Room Acoustics Differently
Planar is a completely new way of doing bass that embraces the home. It's safe to say that in a natural sense, acoustics is the art of doing battle with the room's acoustics with walls, with floors, with ceilings, with the interactions among all those things. And they naturally create peaks and valleys.
When you begin working with the wall and embrace the fact that the wall is there and stop fighting it, which is what we did with Planar, what you very quickly realize is the wall is your single best friend. Right off the bat, we pick up 50% more output for the same amount of electrical energy put in. But here's the thing about Planar. It doesn't just give you more output. It gives you a completely different scale of output. That entire wall becomes the radiating element. It literally becomes a multi-square foot launch wave coming at you and you hear it immediately. Everything tightens up and you get deeper bass that's crisper, clearer, better intonation. It's an incredibly powerful but very, very controlled experience. If you've not heard it before, it gets intoxicating pretty quickly.
REL Performance Without Compromise
One of the things that's really important to get about Planar is they're so pretty. They are so design forward that there's going to be a tendency to just presume, ‘oh yeah, well that's cool, but is it real?’ This is a real REL. So it's important to understand that with Planar, we give you all of the traditional REL virtues. One of the most important things that we're known for is our High- Level connection. We have that. We have .1. We have Low-Level connection just in case you're using something like an active speaker. And so don't for a moment think, ‘well, I'm going to be giving up the real guts and performance of a REL in order to get something that is artistic or pretty.’ This will get it done.
Built for Open Floor Plans & Home Theater
Integrating Planar into an existing setup is easy. Planar meshes beautifully with our existing products. First of all, and that's really important to understand. Second of all, I would say that what this does is it opens up the ways in which you can utilize your system and build it out. Right off the bat, in terms of what kinds and types of homes and rooms benefit the most, I'm going to immediately go to open floor plan houses. They are normally a nightmare for bass because Planar puts the walls to work for you. They are uniquely well adapted to this acoustic environment. If you're into theater, oh my goodness, these make incredible center channel subwoofers. You can take in walls and in ceilings that quite honestly often sound awful. Too often we find that they don't make bass, that the wall is sucking up energy that the speaker could make. So to be able to have something like this that just also suffuses the entire environment with bass is a wonderful application for it.
But it's really really critical to understand this is an enhancement of what we already do. It is not a replacement. It adds to the experience. The applications go on and on.
Wireless Connectivity with Clean Modern Design
It is kind of magical that we're able to produce this kind of performance effortlessly with deep bass and huge impact and dynamics and integrate with your speakers and there's not a cable in sight. We're doing it wirelessly because it is pointless to have a beautiful, clean piece of essentially modern art in your room that makes incredible sound that then requires you to have a huge cable draped across your floor.
The only thing you have to do here is plug it in. So, we use a really sophisticated 6.8 gig wireless system. It is literally pre-twinned. It's paired to its mate. So the transmitter and your receiver that are inside this unit literally embedded within it are already paired.
Versatile REL Bass Performance
Planar is the coolest outgrowth of subwoofers I've ever seen in my career. And the only reason we can do it now is because of all the work we put in over the last 20-21 years building this up to the point that we have all the amps that we need, all of the technology for the wireless that we need. We have studied the acoustics and so we now have all of those abilities pulled together to actually deliver incredible bass in incredibly little space.
Oh, by the way, it's okay to buy something cuz it's just cooler looking than hell. And it's really cool if you get them home and they make incredible bass, too.
