When we set out to design PL-1, the goal wasn’t simply to make a smaller subwoofer. It was to create something that could live in spaces where traditional subwoofers don’t and still behave like a real REL.
That’s a very different problem to solve.

Sometimes Smaller Is the Right Answer
There’s a natural assumption in audio that bigger is always better.
And in terms of sheer output, that’s often true.
But it’s not always what a room or a system needs.
In apartments, lofts, and more compact living spaces, what matters is balance.
Something that integrates cleanly.
Something that doesn’t dominate the room.
Something that still delivers the foundation that music and film rely on.
That’s exactly where PL-1 comes in.
Built for Speed, Balance, and Control
PL-1 is built around a dual 6.5-inch long-throw FibreAlloy driver configuration, powered by a 300-watt amplifier.
On paper, that might seem modest.
In practice, it’s extremely capable.
What matters is how those drivers behave, fast, controlled, and able to blend seamlessly into a system without drawing attention to themselves.
It’s articulate.
It’s precise.
And when called upon, it delivers far more output than you’d expect from something this size.
The Wall is Part of the System
What really makes Planar different is how it uses the room.
A specially tuned 10-inch passive radiator fires toward the wall behind it, using boundary effect coupling to reinforce low frequencies.
Instead of losing energy behind the cabinet, PL-1 puts it to work.
The wall becomes part of the system, helping project bass into the room with a sense of scale that feels far larger than the product itself.

Designed to Integrate, Not Dominate
One of the things I’ve always cared about is how a subwoofer integrates.
Not just technically, but how it feels in the room.
You shouldn’t be aware of it as a separate thing.
It should just feel like everything got better.
PL-1 excels at that.
It connects naturally with stand-mounted speakers and smaller floorstanders.
It doesn’t overwhelm them.
It completes them.
More Capable Than It Looks
We’ve tested PL-1 at levels that exceed what most people will ever use in a home environment.
That’s not about playing loud for the sake of it.
It’s about headroom.
It never feels strained.
It never feels like it’s working too hard.
It just delivers cleanly, consistently, and with control.

It Fits How People Actually Live
A lot of people simply don’t have a place for a traditional subwoofer.
That’s been the reality for years.
PL-1 changes that.
Available in black or white, it integrates naturally into a wide range of interiors without drawing attention to itself.
Its ultra-thin form allows it to sit close to the wall or mount directly on it without disrupting the room.
And with built-in wireless included, there are no cables to run or systems to hide.
You place it.
You power it.
And it works.
Who PL-1 Is For
PL-1 makes the most sense when:
- Your space is more compact
- Your system leans toward simplicity and design integration
- You’re using stand-mounted speakers or smaller floorstanders
- You want performance, but not at the expense of how your room works
In those situations, PL-1 isn’t a compromise.
This is Still a Real REL
It’s important to be clear about this.
PL-1 was never designed to trade performance for convenience.
It may be compact.
It may be easier to place.
But it still delivers the speed, control, and musicality REL is known for.
That was never negotiable.

The Right Kind of Enough
There’s a point in every system where more isn’t better, just different.
PL-1 sits right at that point.
It gives you everything you need to make a system feel complete,
without pushing beyond what the room or the system calls for.
And when you get that balance right,
that’s when everything starts to sound natural.
