Design Is Everything
We’re known for building beauty in a category not known for it. But our designs do more than look good, substance integrates throughout Predator. If you see a design element, it accomplishes a function as well as delivers style. The 25mm top plate, beautifully finished in 5 coats of hand-rubbed lacquer, serves to damp vibration in the cabinet below. Within, a massive windowpane brace damps both side and inner cabinet walls, yet also does double duty supporting the heavy magnet of the driver. And the attractive (but easily wiped clean) cabinet surface looks like expensive line-grained aluminium, but instead is a tough, sexy composite that serves to keep costs reasonable.
Size Still Matters
At 15” and sporting 3” of fore and aft stroke, the core of Predator’s amazing performance centers around its driver. Film sound and music both benefit from quickness; fast drivers result in accurately tracing music’s peaks or a movie’s explosive special effects with equal facility. Using a bonded composite of lightweight glass fibre for the cone’s body with an ultra-light carbon fibre center mass, REL’s designers have been able to pare excess weight away. The 1508’s cone weighs far less than our 10” driver of just a few short years ago. And this driver is built to last, with high quality materials throughout such as natural butyl surrounds that won’t dry out and fail like foam surrounds can.
800 Watts Corrupts Beautifully
Some may wonder why so much power is needed, but 800 watts RMS loafing along means Predator is rarely stressed. When the scene demands, having more than enough power means that the incredible output levels are delivered safely without risk of damage. The amplifier actually outputs peaks of around 1200 watts which makes for massive output. A traditional power supply is used with a huge 1.2KW transformer coupled to a Class D output stage meaning it runs efficiently. Predator demands only 20 watts of power consumption at idle; so little that most will simply leave it on all the time but when on holiday.
Stand and Deliver
HT/1508 Predator offers one more uniquely REL innovation. For truly over the top performance, Predators are designed to be stacked up to three (3) units high using included REL Couplers™ that connect lower units to upper units. These solid, milled aluminium couplers bolt securely to each sub and along with the substantial rails on the underside of each cabinet create an extremely heavy, sturdy tower of bass. When used in stereo stacks (6 total, 3 per side) it represents over 7000 watts of peak power forcing (6) x 15” drivers to give their utmost in the service of breathtaking bass delivered in oceanic torrents of bass.
ZERO COMPRESSION WIRELESS COMPATIBLE
There is wireless and there is REL wireless. We are well-known for having the finest wireless purpose-built systems in the entire component audio world. Though HT-Air™ is affordable, it retains our corporate fixation on zero compression and maximum dynamics delivered via a 5.8 gigahertz network. HT-Air is designed to leave old fashioned Bluetooth-based systems in the dust, delivering latency in the 16-20 millisecond range. This permits owners to place their HT/1508 Predator where it works best for them without resorting to unsightly cables being strewn across the landscape of your living room, all while retaining our category-leading super-fast wireless.
I am writing this after listening to the HT 1508 for a month. First of all I would like to thank Yorkshire Jim for his advice to me on this wonderful subwoofer. I had 2 other popular brands in mind (one of which I was using) along with the Rel before purchasing the HT 1508.
HT 1508 is a very good versatile subwoofer for music & movies. Having used a ported sub & a sub with a passive radiator before, I don't miss the low end extension with this one. It is fast , tight , musical & impactful.
The build quality & looks are a bonus apart from the quality of bass it gives. I would suggest prospective buyers to definitely hear this one out. The only negative I could think of was that the glass top would attract scratches and dust over a period of time. Wish it had the brushed metal finish covering the entire top which looks very classy & does not attract fingerprints. Thanks a lot Rel.
I've purchased from several subwoofer manufacturers over the years, but I didn't really know what I was missing until I walked into a popular audio/video dealership 17 years ago and heard music coming from a display room from across the store. The system had a REL sub I had never heard of before and I was hooked! Loved it and bought it right off the floor. The sub became a beloved member of the family for those 17 years. (It lasted longer than the dealership).
It would be easy to write all the positive things about these subwoofers but you would do better to explore the site and get a much clearer descriptions of what is offered. The staff is knowledgeable and very helpful as well.
I will say two things; the first is specs can be deceiving. True depth of play in your own room is the final test, of course, but the REL's ability to couple to your speakers and pressurize the room with satisfying, deep, articulate bass is stunning. I fully believe there is a REL model that can fit in with any system out there.
The second is longevity. Stretch your budget if you can because these subwoofers will become the foundation of your system(s) for a long time.
The 1508 has astounding agility in a home theater setup and it's ability to play music is equally amazing. Fast and tight.
As far as I'm concerned, money well spent and I'm more than satisfied with the HT/1508 Predator.
I’m coming from two SVS PB2000 Pro subs. So I’m used to great controlled bass. But the Predators are what I would call “carnage bass”. Did an REW sweep with one turned on, good response down to 10hz (I kid you not, though I did put a HPF on to drop the response of quickly under 20hz in the end), natural couple of db peak at about 35 hz, then a big null around 100hz (caused by my room). Turned the second predator on, increased SPL across the board all the way to 10hz and no nulls. All I did was flip the phase, pretty much seamless flat integration out the box with no DSP with my mains. John Wick 3 punches slam your chest and the shot guns near the end, next level. It’s all so controlled, which is the key difference between these and the SVS. The 15 inch driver just adds so much weight, but being a sealed unit it retains its agility. Amazing result. They sound awesome.
I have been an audiophile for many years and wanted to put a clean wireless setup in my living room without spaghetti wires everywhere. I did not want to sacrifice performance, hence; the HT 1508 wireless. Not only does this subwoofer look and sound amazing, is blends in perfectly with my current setup-sonically and visually. I am very happy with customer support with REL. I will be a customer for life as I add new products in the future.
Owned many different subs over the past 20+ years. Last sub I owned was a SVS PB Ultra. It delivered qty, but no quality. Considering i already owned 3 REL subwoofers before, remembering their quality, I decided to give the HT1508 a go. I haven't enjoyed movies this much in years. Have never heard a driver this size being so fast and accurate. I didn't expect it to pressurize my room as it does. It is worth every penny. Great job REL.
