Smooth Speed & Slam
Continuous Cast™ Cone Bass Engine
S/5 SHO’s driver features an all-new alloy cone structure that takes our mid-level product to a performance that exceeds our reference products of only a few years ago. By reducing moving mass, with a balanced approach to design, our engineering team was able to produce far more speed than prior designs. By carefully adjusting key parameters, we were able to increase the self-quieting key to a high end component’s ability to resolve space and inner detail. Improvements in our designs translate into enhancement in your entire system.
Sound Beyond Its Size
Carbon Passive Radiator
S/5 SHO uses a special carbon/carbon passive that is stiff, lightweight and incredibly well-behaved. Our approach to passive design results in performance more akin to a variable ratio driver size. On an S/5 SHO, think of it as a sliding ratio design wherein the S/5 SHO begins as an ultra-fast 12” sealed box design and, as more power and deeper bass is demanded, the S/5 SHO gradually morphs into the power and output of a 15” design.
Fast, Extended Lows
NextGen2 550W Digital Amplifier
Beyond our proprietary drivers, the performance of a REL is determined by our unique input filters and amplifiers. S/5 SHO uses a simple filter-type that is very fast—about 8 milliseconds in group delay– to cross out unwanted higher frequencies to our driver. This speed and our carefully sorted filters allow for seamless blending of RELs with the main speakers. RELs do not include a high pass filter to cross out bass from the main speaker because to do so would generally produce more unwanted effects than the minor benefits such a design confers.
S/5 SHO’s power amplifier is a powerful NextGen2 550W digital amplifier. This design has powered thousands of RELs and has proven exceptionally reliable and very fast with deep, extended lows—it provides a perfect mate to our new driver.
Longbow™ Wireless Connectivity
LongBow permits very fast, uncompressed bass to be sent wirelessly within the same room approximately 45 feet (somewhat dependent upon room clutter). We have selected an un compressed format as it results in natural, quick delivery compared with conventional wi-fi or Bluetooth systems. Because it is a REL, we developed LongBow with both high level (or low level with crossover intact) AND .1 channel delivery so that REL Theatre Reference performance can be maintained even when using our wireless delivery system.

"linearity and bass extension mean nothing if there are no dynamics, and here the REL S5 completes the hat trick of sub-bass virtues, because its dynamism is infectious in the same way a great rhythm simply forces you to move your feet. With the S5, the dynamics likewise force you to become totally involved with the music… there’s not a single one of your senses that is not totally engaged with whatever is playing" Read More +
Greg Borrowman, Audio Esoterica
"The S/5 SHO is a bigger sub than the S/3 in every respect, sounding heftier, bolder and more fulsome. I’m not sure I could detect any real difference in its lowest frequency response, but the S/5 certainly made its LF presence felt more in your chest. Gary Oldman’s opening scene in the Leon SE Blu-ray (part of the revamped Luc Besson collection) is a dynamic tapestry of silences and spectacular impacts that demands the very best sub performance. From Oldman’s 'I like these calm little moments before the storm' line to the opening shotgun blasts, the S/5 delivers plenty of its SHO promise." Read More +
Richard Stevenson, Home Cinema Choice
"Thankfully for bass fans everywhere, nothing has changed in its latest venture, the S/5, which may be the best-performing midpriced sub REL has offered in its vaunted history. The S/5 goes about its tasks so matter-of-factly, effortlessly, and invisibly that it seems to become another attractive fixture in the room—until you pull it from the system. Then you understand what authentic low bass brings to the party. You also begin to understand the meaning of…addiction." Read More +
