REL 201 Q & A

REL 201 – 12:30pm

Does Denon and Marantz do that to all subwoofers?  Really cut the db’s in half?

They do, but that only when you tell the processor that you have a subwoofer, so it only affects REL subs as we’re running high level. Does not change the LFE output.

Are the 101 and 201 recordings available?

We are working with Ken Churchill to get these all up on MagNet, along with some further information that we didn’t cover during these webinars. Stay tuned…

If your Integrated Amp has XLR pre outs for a subwoofer would you recommend that of the Hi level connection?

We would recommend using both the XLR out puts and the high-level connection.  If you happen to run the room correction software(which we don’t recommend, we recommend dialing the system in by ear) disconnect the High-Level connection, by pressing the silver button and giving the high-level connection a quarter turn and breaking the connection but leaving the connection conveniently in place for quick and easy reconnection.   Run the room correction software and reconnect the high-level connection once completed.  Adjust the crossover and gain by ear, and listening to the system and how it reacts to its environment.  If multiple subs, dial the left sub in first, disconnect it, and dial in the right sub next.

What if the subwoofer was discontinued before they could buy a second? What would be your recommendation be for that?

Find creative solutions for the client.  The single sub could be moved and utilized as a center channel subwoofer if for theater application and sub is T/i series or above (high-level connection).  If for 2-channel audio, brainstorm with the client, does he/she have another system that could use the sub and rotate it to that system and focus on selling a stereo pair this time around.

Should a stereo pair of t9i be only connected with high pass if using Denon or Marantz in a family theater?

Stereo pair of T/9i in theater application, use the .1 feeds for both, and place in opposite corners of the room if set-up allows.  One in the front right/left corner and the other sub in the opposite back corner.   Front sub will be connected high-level to the front left and right speaker while the rear sub will be connected to the rear surround speakers, left and right.  In this system, we would highly suggest next step for the client would be to add a sub to the center channel, allowing the client to run all speakers as full-range or large speakers in the system.

touch on line array briefly?  Added benefit of dialing in?

Line Array:  First off, exciting topic, and if you run into a client interested in willing to take on this amazing and unique set-up, reach out to Paul/Jerrad as you design the system.  When doing a line array, it is very exciting to add the subs in pairs, in order to experience what changes each pair brings to the system.   The bottom subs will create that ripple of bass that will travel across the floor, and provide you with great room filling bass, the 2nd pair, will help provide that chest level bass, the punch to the chest, and great dispersion.  Adding the second pair is truly fun and an experience that must be had and enjoyed.  When adding the 3rd pair, to complete the 6-pack, this is when the last step of the magic happens.   The top subs once dialed in properly adds the shimmer, rolls off the back wall and creeps across the ceiling and fills the room with the real-life atmospheric bass, which is as close to what happens in nature as possible.  Built this way, a pair at a time is truly enjoyable and I hope you get to experience a system like this soon.    Dialing it in, takes time, and makes all the difference.

REL 201 – 2pm

How far are the subs from the electrostatics?

These are approximately two feet away. In a larger room, we’d have them on the outside for a larger soundstage.

Most processors have 2 sub outs at most. How are you splitting the LFE output?

In REL 3D, we are running LFE to Front and Rear subs, running High Level only to the center channel.

Can we achieve 3d bass using HT REL with pre outs from receiver or processor?

The key to REL 3D is utilizing our High Level cable to provide a full range signal to the center channel. A common REL 3D setup using our HT line, is HT1508 in front corner, HT1205 in opposite rear corner and a T/9i wired high level directly to the center channel speaker terminals
